Like the rest of the world the team at Mobspot was sad to hear of Steve Jobs passing today. He lived a great life and touched many, many lives not just his vision but his ability to buy into his vision. We often say around here that ideas are a dime a dozen, and great ideas a quarter a dozen, but neither are worth a damn without execution - and the ability to execute on a vision is why Steve stood out amongst CEOs. He spoke with such belief and charisma in what he was doing that each and every individual on his team bought into his vision and worked towards making it a reality, and from Main Street to Wall Street people hung on his every world as he described to him how their latest innovation would change their lives.
Like the rest of you my facebook, twitter and other news feeds have been on fire with the news of Steve Jobs death. People talking about not just mourning his passing and feeling for his friends and family but actually breaking down and physically crying for a man they've never met. That thought really resonated with me and while driving home from kickboxing this evening I was thinking you know, this man has really touched a LOT of people, and maybe it's possible to use that to make something bright out of a dark moment, one last capstone on the legacy of a man that has left behind one hell of a legacy.
Think about this for a second. Apple has sold over 250 million iOS devices. To be sure a ton of those were sold to people who didn't give two thoughts about Steve Jobs, in fact they probably don't even know who he is and only know that their device provides some utility to them. But, what if just 10% of those consumers were so touched by the man behind the devices that they donated just one dollar to cancer research. Just a simple buck, one hundred pennies (you know, those bronze things they give you as change that you think nothing of and likely have sitting in a jar somewhere), less than half the cost of a daily cup of coffee. That's $25 million right there. What if half of that 10% gave two dollars? Now we're up to $37.5 million additional dollars going to cancer research that weren't there yesterday - and that's just on 10% of the consumers.
So, it's up to you the people now. Can we start a movement and let Steve's legacy shine on? I've put together a short list of cancer charities below, it's up to you to decide if you can part with $1. If you do decide to donate send out a tweet with #donateadollarforsteve. With any luck and a lot of love come midday tomorrow we'll see #donateadollarforsteve trending on twitter.
